In these tough economic times, saving one’s job is typically the top priority. To one lifeguard on Hallandale Beach in Florida, saving the life of a stranger was more important. His fellow lifeguards agreed, quitting their jobs in protest.
Tomas Lopez, 21, was fired for knowingly violating the strictly enforced rule of leaving his post. His employer refused to back down from this violation even after it became clear that he had left his post to save the life of a man who was drowning slightly outside of his posted area.
“It was a moral thing to do. I would never pick a job over my morals.”
His employer, Jeff Ellis and Associates has since offered his job back, obviously after the negative attention as this story has enraged people all over the country.
