Gone are the days of the yard sale and flea market. In its place, online classifieds and auction sites bring potential buyers from all over the world to you (most of the time at little or no charge). So whether you are selling your baseball card collection to a sports geek in Iowa or your precious Mustang GT in order to get a minivan, here are some tips to get the most out of selling online.

Tip #1: Market Research

Before posting your item, make sure you are not high-balling or heaven forbid, low-balling what the market dictates it to be worth. In order to do this, do a quick Google search and then search within the local/national markets on auction sites and classifieds alike.

Example Item: Throwback Terry Bradshaw – Pittsburgh Steelers Jersey. If you do an eBay search and find they are selling from anywhere between $45-100, check out the condition your competitors’ items are in and adjust your item price accordingly.

Tip #2: Detailed Description and Compelling Title

Make sure you spell check your description and make it as detailed as possible. Tell the customer everything worth knowing about the item and list all of its features.

The title should never be in ALL CAPS and don’t waste precious letters on symbols like (*, ~ or $). That’s just annoying. Be short, concise and highlight the best qualities of the item. For instance, if you are selling a car and it gets 32mpg, include that within the title.

Tip #3: Good Photos

Buying online is already scary for the customer as it is. Ease this fear by providing high-quality shots of the item. Don’t just throw it in a wad on the dirty floor with your poodle in the background, snap a quick shot and call it a day. Display the item in its most flattering position. Show that you actually care to sell it. Take shots of multiple angles and any features you want to showcase.

Tip #4: HTML to Post Unlimited Photos

Since most sites only allow a few images, use simple HTML to add more images and jazz up your item a bit. This is extremely helpful in establishing credibility with the potential buyer.

*Craigslist and eBay only allow four images (eBay charges additional fees after four).

Flickr Photos
Step 1: Create a Flickr account (free)
Step 2: Take photos of the item and upload them to Flickr
Step 3: At your Flickr.com profile page, click the image you wish to embed within the ad
Step 4: Click ‘Share’ located above the image and then copy/paste the code into the HTML template provided below

Example HTML Code (only modify RED text – GREEN text is Flickr code to copy/paste over)

Tip #5 Re-post Often
