Last night I watched the much anticipated Spring Breakers movie from director Harmony Korine. My advice, learn who Harmony Korine is as a director before watching this movie. I am confident in assuming that the majority of the readers have never before seen the movie Gummo. Why I bring this all up is due to the young high school / college demographic who will be filling the theater seats for this movie. Many of whom filled the theater last night. The same demo who grew up watching Selena Gomez on the Disney Channel and is excited to see her in a Spring Break movie partying and drinking. If you are among the many who think this is a typical comedic and fun spring break college flick with hot chicks, you will be extremely disappointed.

SPRING BREAKERS SYNOPSIS

Brit, Candy, Cotty, and Faith have been best friends since grade school. They live together in a boring college dorm and are hungry for adventure. All they have to do is save enough money for spring break to get their shot at having some real fun. A serendipitous encounter with rapper “Alien” promises to provide the girls with all the thrill and excitement they could hope for. With the encouragement of their new friend, it soon becomes unclear how far the girls are willing to go to experience a spring break they will never forget.

Starring James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, and Ashley Benson.

MY THOUGHTS

This is the first movie to be released on my 2013 wish list so the excitement and anticipation was built up high for Spring Breakers. What did I think of the movie? I F’n loved it. Doing my best to ignore the consistent side chatter and giggles from all of the young kids who showed up to watch what they thought would be a spring break version of American Pie, I watched this unique and genius film unfold. (Was that a run-on sentence? Because I can go on for hours describing the hate I had for the audience last night….)

MY ADVICE

If you are someone who can appreciate a good film, please take this advice: see this movie during the day! Why do I say that? To truly enjoy and appreciate the entire film, it’s best done without a group of young kids in the theater. During the day, you have a better chance of these kids not being there. Spring Breakers is a movie you have to pay close attention to. With multiple narrators speaking over a scattered series of color-themed memories, this film is one you want to pay attention to.

I can’t be too upset about the audience who was watching the movie, I guess. One of the best aspects of the film is it’s preconceived notions from the general public. This film could have easily brought in a very different cast filling it with actors who would not be out of their element. But instead, Spring Breakers was filled with a couple young Disney Channel hotties in a storyline completely outside of their resume. That was the point I guess…

THE AWESOME STUFF

Selena Gomez, personally was never a fan. I always thought she looked like a little Mexican boy with make-up. That is until I saw her in a bikini smoking a bong. Good work on that Justin Bieber, way to F that one up. Vanessa Hudgens and her bad ass little attitude, I fell in love with her right along side Alien. Also was pretty easy to also fall in love with Ashley Benson. And moving on to James Franco as Alien, I could not have approved any more. It’s as if 20 years later the ghost of Drexl reappears. The only difference between Drexl and Alien is, Alien sings Britney Spears.
