Michael Reppucci seems to think it’s possible. In fact, he left his job and put his life savings on the line to prove it. Reppucci is no fool though, he recruited Master Distiller David Pickerell to help him try to turn the American liquor industry on end. So far, Reppucci and his fellow upstarts have managed to place Rhode Island firmly on the American whiskey map with a unique offering from their South Kingstown based distillery, Sons of Liberty.
With Pickerell’s know-how and Reppucci’s creativity, they began experimenting with recipes and flavor profiles, creating a flavorful young whiskey along the way. While most distillers use corn to make a somewhat flavorless base product, Sons of Liberty uses a blend of four different European malted barleys – each roasted to a different level – to essentially make a flavorful stout beer, which is used as their base product. After being distilled twice, the 130 proof whiskey is brought down to 80 proof and flavored with American oak. The result is Uprising – a smooth, easy-sipping, multilayered whiskey.
This unique American whiskey is well-suited to being served neat or over ice with ginger beer and bitters as a traditional Nor’easter cocktail. We prefer to sip it slightly-chilled and undiluted, using our handcrafted whiskey stones. Drink it how you like. After all, it’s a free country. And thanks to Sons of Liberty, this country just got a little more interesting.
